Clarity

20 05 2013

Normally, I highly dislike Top 40 songs because they’re simply terrible, but for some reason, this song won’t leave my mind. The melody is just so good, and the lyrics are surprisingly distinct. This version is my favourite because, well, it’s the best. The produced version should be a remix, not the other way around.

Oh. And I learned to play this on the piano today.

The Hardest Part

29 12 2012

It happened again.  I “got” another song, and it just broke my heart when I sang it because it`s exactly how I feel and it`s what I`ve always been struggling to deal, especially this month: loneliness and feeling like people just let go of me, and I take no part in it.

I still wonder what it`s all about.

Happy Xmas, Xmas people.

“Fuck You / Till You’re Gone” — Gabe Dixon

28 10 2012

I just discovered Mr. Gabe Dixon via an episode of Parks and Recreation, and I gotta say, I wish I could improvise and play like him.  To me, he’s the blues version of Jamie Cullum, but a bit less crazy/eccentric.  If I had the choice to either learn how to improvise or play Classical music, I’d pick improvising.  It’s just so much freer and way more impressive to me.  I’ve been trying to improvise more, and it’s really difficult sometimes.  I will probably never be able to play so free and fearlessly as Gabe Dixon or Jamie Cullum, but alas.  It’s times like these when I think my ARCT Diploma in Piano Performance means shit.  Which it basically does anyway.

“Get Good” — Vanessa Carlton

18 03 2011

It’s been a while since I posted something in the Music category, mainly because I wanted to concentrate on writing other things more, but lately, I haven’t been very inspired to write anything awesome, but I figured I might as well post something now since it appears as if I have something to say!

Anyone who even remotely knows me knows that I adore Vanessa Carlton and anything she does.  Unfortunately, most people only know her by “A Thousand Miles” which was almost 10 years ago now (wow…) but she has much better songs!  Really!  Vanessa’s planning to release her 4th album titled Rabbits on the Run this June on the 21st and she’s played some new songs off the record.  Like a true fan, I love all her new material but one in particular is affecting.

According to Carlton, “Get Good” was written for a friend of her’s who was going through a tough time in her life with a divorce.  I find the lyrics to be really deep and oddly healing.  I’ve listened to this song when I’m feeling emotional and it somehow manages to calm me down, to bring me back down and to think somewhat rationally again.  And such is the power of music.

The clip I’ve linked to is the premier of the song and Vanessa explains a bit about the song before playing it (to just hear the song, skip to 1:59)  And surprise!  There’s no piano in the song!  (or at least the live, here)  Enjoy!

Secret

28 02 2011

I thought I had posted all the song lyrics I had written but apparently not.

Secret

Breathe a secret in a bottle,
careful not to spill a drop.
Slam a cork in,
throw it away.

But it someone were to catch this message,
he swears his world would fall.
So it’s best not to breathe
than say anything at all.

CHORUS:

I know it’s hard but
every word you say, every step you take
will lead you to where you belong.
And out of darkness,
there’ll be a light, you’ll no longer fight
with the demons of doubt in your head.
And walk through the door

And with each passing day
the secret’s in his heart.
You can layer on the lies
but a thought is never too far.
A thought is never too far,
a thought is never too far.

CHORUS

And when the bottle washes up on someone’s shores,
that’ll be the day… someday.

Double music post

24 09 2010

I’m sure you’re all dying to know what happens in the last part of The Meaning of Life, but why not create more suspense and post something else instead!  It just happened that I had one of those days where a seemingly (good) random song gets stuck in your headand you just go around singing it all day long but not too loud on the street so that people give you weird looks?  Yup, that happened today, mainly the first song/vid: Jeremy Fisher’s “Scar That Never Heals”. Everything this guy plays is golden.   Seriously, he can never go wrong in my books and the fact that he’s Canadian is beyond awesome.

The second song/vid is from Vanessa Carlton, who, as many of my friends know, I am an uber fan of.  I’m surprised I haven’t already posted a link to one of her songs already but this is certainly one of her best.  I played it earlier this evening on my piano and it made me tear up a bit because of the notion behind the song — that if we were to declare we only needed one or two things in this instant, we would, in theory, be happy and satisfied.  We wouldn’t need anything more than this.  Here’s “More Than This”.
