You Always Hurt the One You Love

28 08 2013

When I first saw the trailer to Blue Valentine, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I think I wasn’t all that impressed — yet another romance film about a straight couple. Great. But I do love Michelle Williams, and last night, i finally got to watching it. Wow, that was intense, to say the least. And so heart-breakingly sad too, in a good way.

I think this is my favourite movie at the moment. When I hear Ryan Gosling singing “You Always Hurt the One You Love” to a tap-dancing Michelle Williams, although it’s a wonderfully romantic scene, it makes me sad. And it’s not just that the song and lyrics themselves are actually wonderfully, achingly sad, but that, juxtaposed with their relationship as it falls apart, you know this is one of the few genuinely happy and romantic moments they will ever have. That is what makes it feel even sadder.
